As we have been able to return to in-person courses, the WFR Remote Extension course will be discontinued as an offering after July 1, 2021. If your certification is expiring and an in-person course is not available or is not an option for you, please contact the LWM office for options.

I highly recomend taking this course. It's jam packed for a great WFR refresher. I didn't just refresh my knowledge and my skills, but I also enjoyed it thoroughly! If you are indecisive on whether to enroll or not, do. You'll be very happy you did. Jason, Katie, and the Longleaf Wilderness Medicine Team know their stuff and know how to transmit it too.

Wow! I was honestly super impressed with this recertification process and course. The lectures are great, as interactive as a fully remote course can be and helpful. Longleaf is super responsive to messages and are just overall great. I’ve done in person classes with LongLeaf and now this remote option and you can clearly see the care and work put into both. I’ll be back in person when that’s an option again! In terms of timing, i got the link to the course right after signing up, it took me 2 long days of online learning (5-7 hours each day) and then about an hour to make/shrink/upload/submit my full assessment video. Thanks longleaf!

Good online option for recertification especially in this weird time when finding classes can be really tough. Has a few unique interactive features that are really cool and make the course more interesting and engaging than just watching digital whiteboard presentations. There is a fair amount of whiteboard lecture learning but it is split up nicely with interactive case studies, choose your own adventure style scenarios, and in person patient assessment prompts you can do with anyone you are around. I was super impressed with all of the personal interactions I had around this course. Needed to redo a portion of my patient assessment and an instructor took the time to video call with me so I didn't have to re-upload a video again. Also had a time sensitive application I needed my card for and they got it to me within 20 minutes of contacting them about it. Will defiantly look to recertify with Longleaf in person in the future.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I am not an LWM alum. Am I eligible to take this course?

Anyone who is eligible to take LWM's in-person or hybrid WFR Recert course is eligible to take the remote extension course to earn a one year WFR certification with LWM.

    Check your eligibility

  • Why does the extension course only issue a one year certification?

Without a lot of practice (and we hope you are not needing your WFR skills often!) skills get rusty. The one year extension is designed to be a bridge until in-person courses can be offered more frequently and consistently; it is not intended to replace the benefits of in-class practice and demonstration.

  • I am an LWM alum and I have lost my certification card. How do I get a new copy of my card?

Email the LWM office and we'll get you a new copy of your card to upload.

  • How is the course structured?

The WFR extension contains whiteboard lectures, readings, assessment practice scenarios, patient assessment demonstration, skills practice, and a final knowledge assessment.

  • How long will it take to complete the course?

The nature of self-paced allows some variation, but you should allow approximately 12 hours to complete the course. This estimation includes both the required video presentations, reading assignments, and skill demonstration.

  • How do I find out more about or contact Longleaf Wilderness Medicine?
